Blue during Advent

Question: Am I crazy or didn’t we used to use Purple during Advent?

You are absolutely not crazy, we did used to use the purple hangings and vestments for Advent. But the focus of the season has changed from penitential to anticipatory, and in the spirit of the anticipation of Christ’s birth it was thought that blue — a color traditionally associated with Mary — was a more fitting color.

We reserve the purple now for Lent which is a penitential season in our church life and will arrive soon — Ash Wednesday will be on March 2nd this year, marking the beginning of the season of Lent.
